Africa's Exports Set to Double by 2030, Fueled by Asian Demand
According to Standard Chartered Bank Plc, Africa's annual exports are expected to double to $540 billion by 2030 from a decade earlier, driven by growing demand from Asian nations such as India, Indonesia, and mainland China. This is due to several macro-economic dynamics that are creating a lot of demand, including new marketplaces and newer, more progressive organizations.
Nigeria is predicted to lead this growth, with India being the largest and fastest-growing importer of Nigerian shipments, expected to reach $112 billion by 2030 from $44 billion in 2020. Indonesia and mainland China will also remain key markets for Africa's largest economy, accounting for 12% and 10% of exports respectively by 2030.
Kenyan exports to Pakistan, which have historically been dominated by tea, are expected to increase by 11% annually to $1 billion by 2030. In the decade leading up to 2030, exports from East Africa's largest economy are projected to reach $10.2 billion, up from $4.9 billion, boosted by shipments to Uganda and the United States, which will account for about 11% and 9% of exports, respectively.
As a result of the pandemic, many companies are localizing and shortening their supply chains, setting up new production facilities in Africa to be closer to markets and benefit from trade bloc agreements. Standard Chartered is responding to this by providing more digital settlement solutions as clients seek more convenient payment options.
"One of the things that the pandemic created was an urgency with our clients to have a larger acceptance of digital," said Ricky Kaura, the bank's regional head of transaction banking in Asia Pacific, Africa, and the Middle East.
In conclusion, Africa's export industry is set to experience substantial growth in the next decade, fueled by demand from Asian markets. As companies look to shorten their supply chains and take advantage of trade bloc agreements, digital payment options are becoming increasingly popular. Standard Chartered Bank is well-positioned to help clients navigate this new landscape by providing more digital settlement solutions.
