Cold Chain's Johannesburg Moment: What the GCCA Africa Agenda Says About Where the Money Is Going

Africa's cold chain industry met in Johannesburg on 2 and 3 September, and the speaker list said as much about where the sector is heading as the agenda did: the keynote slots went to a ports and rail operator, not to a refrigeration company.

WAREHOUSING AND STORAGE

7 September 2026 • 4 min read

The GCCA African Cold Chain Conference 2026 ran under the theme “It's Time for Dialogue: Exploring Progress, Priorities, and Partnerships” — and the two headline speakers came from DP World's logistics and rail businesses. Cold storage is being pulled into the corridor conversation.

Who was in the room

The Global Cold Chain Alliance staged its African conference in Johannesburg on 2–3 September 2026, drawing cold chain operators, logistics providers, infrastructure developers, technology companies, food producers, retailers, policymakers and investors into the same programme.

The keynotes were delivered by William Sears, chief commercial officer for logistics in Africa at DP World, and Mohammed Mahomedy, the group's head of infrastructure and rail for Africa. They were joined by Dr Newton Matope, chief executive of Cold Solutions Kenya and GCCA Africa chairman; Brent Melvin, general manager at RSA Logistics in Dubai, speaking on the sector's response to Middle East supply chain disruption; and Dr John Deng Diar Diing, executive secretary of the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority, on how regional corridors strengthen intra-African trade.

Cold storage is being folded into corridor strategy

The central theme of the programme was integrated logistics — connecting ports, railways, road transport, warehousing and inland facilities into a single planned network rather than a chain of separately procured legs. For temperature-controlled cargo, that framing matters more than it does for dry freight, because every handover in a fragmented chain is a point at which the cold breaks.

The demand drivers named at the event are familiar to anyone moving perishables in the region: urbanisation, expanding supermarket networks, rising pharmaceutical volumes, growing food exports, and consumers who now expect fresh product to arrive fresh. Post-harvest loss caused by inadequate storage and transport remains the counterweight — and the reason cold chain investment is increasingly described as essential rather than optional.

The technology list is now the compliance list

Among the tools flagged as gaining traction across African cold chains: IoT sensors for real-time temperature monitoring, GPS tracking on refrigerated transport, AI for demand forecasting and inventory optimisation, cloud-based warehouse management systems, predictive maintenance on refrigeration plant, and electronic documentation to speed customs clearance.

The operational argument is that these let an operator detect a temperature excursion before the product is compromised, rather than discovering it at delivery. The commercial argument is sharper: international food safety standards and premium export buyers increasingly expect a verifiable temperature record, which turns monitoring from a nice-to-have into a condition of access. The same digitalisation also gives the customer visibility — which changes who can win the contract.

What This Means for SADC Logistics Operators

If the buyers of cold chain capacity are now thinking in integrated port-rail-road-warehouse terms, a standalone cold room or a standalone reefer fleet becomes a component someone else assembles — and prices. Operators in Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe should be looking for partners at the handover points on their corridors rather than only investing in their own node, and should treat a continuous, auditable temperature record as the entry ticket to export-grade work, not as an upsell.
