Five Product Groups, 73% of the Cargo: KwaZulu-Natal's Concentration Problem Is a Freight Problem

KwaZulu-Natal generated R315.6 billion in nominal customs exports in 2025 and ran a R100.8 billion trade surplus -- but five product groups accounted for 73% of that export value, and real exports remain 15% below their 2022 peak.

The province that hosts Southern Africa's busiest container port has not recovered to pre-pandemic freight and manufacturing levels. Export compound annual growth contracted 5.6% between 2023 and 2025, and the Durban Business Confidence Index fell back into negative territory at 48.82 in Q2 2026. For hauliers built around KZN volume, the concentration risk is the number that matters.

What the Numbers Show

On headline value, KwaZulu-Natal still looks strong. R315.6 billion in nominal customs exports and a R100.8 billion trade surplus are substantial figures for a single province. But nominal value in a period of rand weakness and commodity price movement flatters the underlying picture. Measured in real terms, exports in 2025 sat around 15% below the 2022 peak, and the compound annual growth rate for exports contracted by 5.6% across the 2023 to 2025 period.

Manufacturing output has followed the same path. Neither freight performance nor factory production has returned to pre-pandemic levels, and the Durban Business Confidence Index reading of 48.82 in the second quarter of 2026 puts sentiment back below the neutral line after a period of tentative improvement.

Export concentration: precious metals R74.4bn, ores R59.3bn, vehicles and parts R43.1bn, aluminium R36.4bn and wood pulp R17.2bn together make up 73% of KZN's provincial exports. (Source: Freight News / provincial customs data, 2025)

Why Concentration Is the Operational Risk

Five product groups carrying nearly three-quarters of provincial export value means the freight task attached to those exports is equally concentrated. Precious metals move in small, high-value, security-intensive consignments. Ores and aluminium are bulk and rail-sensitive. Vehicles and parts depend on ro-ro terminal capacity and on trade access to a handful of destination markets. Wood pulp is a specialised bulk flow with a narrow customer base.

A single tariff decision, a single mine curtailment or a single plant shutdown does not shave a percentage point off provincial volume. It removes a lane. Operators whose fleet, equipment and depot footprint were built around one of these five flows carry a concentration risk they did not choose and cannot easily diversify out of inside a contract cycle.

Reading the Confidence Number Correctly

A business confidence index below 50 is not a forecast; it is a description of how firms are behaving now. At 48.82, more Durban businesses are holding back on investment, hiring and inventory commitment than are expanding. For transport operators, that translates into shorter contract terms, slower payment cycles, more spot work and less appetite among customers to guarantee volume -- the exact conditions under which fleet utilisation becomes difficult to plan.

Business leaders in the province have framed the slow recovery as a call for collaborative action on high operating costs and infrastructure constraints. That is the right diagnosis, but it is a multi-year agenda. The operator-level response has to be shorter: understand which of the five flows your revenue actually depends on, and price the volatility rather than assuming it away.

What This Means for SADC Logistics Operators

Map your KZN revenue against the five product groups and calculate what share sits in any single one -- anything above a third is a concentration exposure worth managing. Where you can, chase backhaul and inland distribution work that is not tied to the export basket. And in a sub-50 confidence environment, tighten payment terms before volume tightens, not after.
