Cape Town Plugs In: The First Locally-Bodied Electric Buses Arrive, and Freight Should Be Watching

Cape Town is set to become the first South African city to run electric buses in scheduled service, with its first electric MyCiTi vehicles arriving in August 2026 -- and the bodies are being built locally in Johannesburg.

Public Transport

14 August 2026 • 5 min read

Twelve low-floor Volvo BZRLE e-buses will roll out between August and December, part of a plan for 30 electric buses by mid-2027. It is a public-transport story with direct lessons for anyone thinking about electrifying a freight fleet.

What Cape Town Is Rolling Out

The city takes delivery of its first electric MyCiTi bus in August 2026, followed by twelve 12-metre low-floor Volvo BZRLE electric buses arriving between October and December. The target is 30 new electric buses in service by June 2027, alongside plans to launch the first fully electric minibus taxi routes in Century City later this year.

The detail that stands out is local content: these are the first of the fleet where the bus bodies are manufactured in South Africa, in Johannesburg. That keeps assembly jobs and skills in the country rather than importing complete vehicles -- a template regulators will point to as electrification spreads to other cities.

A Live Test of the Charging Question

Buses and freight trucks face the same core challenges: depot charging, route range, load-shedding resilience and the upfront cost premium of electric vehicles. A municipal bus fleet running fixed daily routes from a central depot is close to an ideal proving ground, and the operational data it generates -- energy per kilometre, charging turnaround, uptime -- will be some of the most useful real-world evidence available in the SADC region.

Freight operators weighing their own electrification should treat this rollout as a free case study. The questions Cape Town answers about grid supply, depot infrastructure and vehicle availability are the same ones a logistics business must answer before committing capital to electric trucks.

Shared Roads, Shared Standards

Public transport and freight share the same urban arterials, the same fuel and energy markets and increasingly the same push toward cleaner vehicles. As cities and clients start to expect lower-emission transport, the operators who have already piloted the technology -- or at least understood its constraints -- will be a step ahead when tenders begin asking about it.

The honest caveat is that electric works first where routes are predictable and vehicles return to a depot each night. That describes municipal buses and urban last-mile delivery far better than it describes long cross-border haulage -- which is exactly why the early wins will show up in cities before they reach the open corridor.

What This Means for SADC Logistics Operators

Cape Town's e-bus rollout is a real-world test of the same charging, range and cost questions freight electrification faces. Watch the depot and uptime data, target urban last-mile routes for your own early electric pilots, and expect emissions questions to start appearing in city and client tenders.
