Off the Truck, Onto the Rail: Zimbabwe Opens a 1,000km Lithium Route to Maputo

Africa's biggest lithium producer has just moved its first rail consignment of the battery mineral to the sea. In July 2026 Zimbabwe railed 1,000 tonnes of lithium concentrate roughly 1,000 kilometres from a mine in Gwanda to the port of Maputo -- a route that could pull one of the region's fastest-growing bulk exports off congested roads.

Zimbabwe mostly trucks its lithium to port -- slower, costlier and prone to bottlenecks. A new partnership between the National Railways of Zimbabwe, Grindrod's Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway and a local logistics firm has moved the first 1,000 tonnes by rail to Maputo, and it signals where the region's mineral logistics are heading.

The route, leg by leg

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) said its collaboration with private operators now provides the capacity to haul lithium concentrate to Maputo by rail. Working with Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway (BBR), a unit of South Africa's Grindrod, and Zimbabwean logistics firm Silvergill, the partners sent the first 1,000 tonnes of concentrate from Tsingshan Holding Group's Gwanda Lithium Mine to the Mozambican port.

The journey stitches together three rail segments: the first 180 km from Gwanda to Beitbridge on BBR's track, a 300 km NRZ line from Beitbridge to the Chicualacuala border with Mozambique, and then the roughly 522 km Limpopo line from Chicualacuala to Maputo -- a total rail leg of about 1,000 km. It is a textbook example of cross-border corridor cooperation replacing a fragmented road haul.

The volumes at stake: Zimbabwe exported 1.13 million tonnes of lithium-bearing spodumene concentrate to China in 2025, and producers forecast lithium sulphate exports reaching 344,000 tonnes by 2030. (Source: Mining Weekly / Reuters, 2026)

Why rail matters for a bulk mineral

Lithium concentrate is a heavy, low-value-per-tonne bulk commodity -- exactly the kind of cargo where rail's cost-per-tonne-kilometre advantage is decisive. Trucking it is more expensive and, as Zimbabwe's exporters know, fraught with logistical bottlenecks at borders and on strained roads. Most of the country's lithium mines already sit along a west-south-east rail corridor leading to Mozambique, from where the minerals are shipped to China.

The scale of the prize is large. Chinese miners -- including Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, Sinomine, Sichuan Yahua, Chengxin Lithium and Tsingshan -- have invested about US$2 billion in Zimbabwean mines and plants since 2021. That output has to reach the coast somehow, and rail is the only mode that can carry it at the volumes now in play.

A railway rebuilding from a low base

The context is a railway clawing its way back. NRZ freight volumes collapsed from a peak of 12 million tonnes in the 1990s to just two million tonnes in 2025, hollowed out by years of under-investment. Partnering with private logistics firms is how it now hopes to rebuild volumes -- and mineral traffic, with its predictable flows and committed shippers, is the most bankable cargo to build around.

A single 1,000-tonne consignment is a demonstration, not a transformation. But it proves the corridor works commercially, and it hands Zimbabwe's producers a cheaper, more reliable alternative to the road for a mineral the world increasingly wants.

What This Means for SADC Logistics Operators

The Maputo corridor is becoming a serious outlet for Zimbabwean minerals, and rail is taking share from trucks on the long-haul leg. Road hauliers on these routes should reposition toward mine-to-railhead feeder runs and first-mile collection, while forwarders should track capacity and slot availability on the NRZ-BBR-Limpopo line as more producers seek rail slots to Maputo.
