12.5 Million Electric Kilometres: South Africa's Battery Trucks Are Quietly Building an Operating Record

South Africa's early-adopter electric truck fleets -- including DSV, FedEx, Woolworths and Vodacom -- have now collectively covered more than 12.5 million kilometres, avoiding an estimated 2.75 million kilograms of CO2 emissions. Diesel still rules the roads, but the country's battery-electric trucking experiment has quietly become an operating record.

Carbon Footprint

4 July 2026 • 3 min read

The debate about electric trucks in Southern Africa has shifted from "will they work here?" to "on which routes do they already work?" With 12.5 million real kilometres logged and off-grid charging appearing on the N3, the answer is being written in fleet data, not brochures.

From Pilot Projects to Fleet Percentages

The clearest signal comes from DSV. After launching its first 8-tonne electric truck in late 2025, the logistics group has added six Volvo FM electric units to its South African operation -- meaning roughly 15% of its local fleet now runs on batteries. The move follows DSV's global agreement with Volvo Trucks to purchase 300 electric trucks in Europe, taking its worldwide electric fleet to around 500 vehicles.

Other early adopters -- FedEx, Woolworths, Vodacom and several retail distribution fleets -- have concentrated their electric units on predictable, depot-based routes: urban distribution, fixed shuttles and return-to-base runs where charging can be planned rather than hoped for.

Charging Without Eskom: The N3 Experiment

The long-haul question has always been charging. Zero Carbon Charge has now opened off-grid, solar-plus-battery fast-charging stations at Tugela and the Reitz Roadside Interchange on the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban, backed by a R100 million investment from the Development Bank of Southern Africa. Each station can charge up to eight vehicles simultaneously -- entirely independent of the Eskom grid.

That independence matters twice over in a SADC context: it removes load-shedding risk from the charging equation, and it offers a template for corridors where grid capacity is weak -- exactly the conditions on most regional trunk routes.

Diesel Still Rules -- and That Is Fine for Now

Perspective is essential. Electric units remain a tiny fraction of South Africa's truck parc, purchase prices are still steep, and cross-border long-haul remains diesel territory for years to come. No operator should feel behind for running a diesel fleet in 2026.

But the commercial logic is compounding. Multinational shippers increasingly report value-chain emissions and award tenders accordingly, fuel remains the largest single operating cost, and every kilometre of documented electric operation builds the local case for residual values, maintenance costs and uptime. The 12.5-million-kilometre dataset is exactly what fleet financiers and insurers have been waiting for.

What This Means for SADC Logistics Operators

Identify one or two depot-based, fixed-route lanes where an electric truck could run today, and model the numbers against the early-adopter data rather than overseas case studies. Even operators years away from buying should start capturing per-route fuel and emissions baselines now -- the customers demanding lower-carbon transport will ask for exactly that evidence at the next tender.
