Maersk Puts Its Reefer Fleet Online: What Smarter Cold Containers Mean for SADC Perishable Exporters

Maersk is rolling out a next-generation Internet of Things connectivity platform across its global refrigerated container fleet, with about 30% of reefers already upgraded. The system transmits cargo-condition data more reliably and frequently, letting problems be spotted before they spoil a shipment.

Supply Chain Management

For a grape farmer in the Western Cape or a beef exporter in Namibia, the scariest part of the journey has always been the part nobody can see. Maersk's reefer upgrade is a signal of where cold-chain supply chains are heading: continuous visibility from packhouse to port of discharge.

What Maersk Is Actually Changing

The upgrade replaces the older telemetry units on Maersk's refrigerated containers with a next-generation IoT platform that transmits data more reliably and more frequently during transit. That allows cargo conditions — temperature above all — to be monitored closely enough to identify potential problems before they affect the shipment, rather than discovering them at destination.

Roughly a third of the global reefer fleet has been converted, with the roll-out continuing across the remaining containers as part of the line's broader digitalisation strategy for end-to-end supply chain visibility.

Why It Matters for Temperature-Sensitive Trade

Improved visibility of refrigerated cargo helps exporters of fruit, meat and pharmaceuticals monitor shipments and respond faster to potential issues, according to Bruce Marshall, Maersk's Head of Reefer Cargo. The platform also supports predictive maintenance of reefer machinery, reducing the likelihood of refrigeration failures mid-voyage — historically one of the costliest and least controllable risks in perishable logistics.

Southern Africa is squarely in the blast radius of this change. Citrus, table grapes, stone fruit, meat and fish move out of SADC ports in reefer containers by the tens of thousands each season, and a single undetected temperature excursion can turn a container of export fruit into a rejected consignment and an insurance fight.

The Visibility Standard Is Moving Inland

When ocean carriers offer live, container-level condition data as standard, the expectation does not stop at the quay. Shippers will increasingly demand the same visibility across the road leg — from packhouse to port stack — and from the cold stores and transporters that handle cargo before it is plugged in on board.

That puts the pressure on the weakest links: unrefrigerated staging, gensets that fail on the road, and paper-based handover records. Road hauliers running reefer work between SADC production areas and ports of Cape Town, Durban, Walvis Bay and Maputo should expect telematics-backed temperature accountability to become a contract condition, not a differentiator.

What This Means for SADC Logistics Operators

If you carry perishables, get your own data house in order: genset monitoring, in-trailer temperature logging and clean digital handover records will soon be table stakes as carriers make end-to-end visibility the norm. Operators who can hand a shipper an unbroken temperature record from farm gate to ship's rail will win the premium reefer work — and dodge the liability disputes.
