One Million Tonnes, One Big Question: Can SADC's Corridors Carry Zambia's 2026 Copper Surge?

Zambia is on track to top one million tonnes of copper output in 2026 — a milestone that turns the spotlight away from the mines and onto the corridors that have to move the metal to the sea.

Mining and Commodities

Production is ramping faster than logistics. With Zambia targeting 1.2 million tonnes by 2027, the real constraint on the Copperbelt is no longer the orebody — it is which route can reliably get the metal out.

A Production Surge With Real Momentum

Zambia's 2025 output climbed about 8% to nearly 890,000 tonnes, a record year, and the country is forecasting more than one million tonnes in 2026 and 1.2 million by 2027. The growth is backed by heavyweight investment from First Quantum and Barrick, and it reflects a structural bet that copper demand — for electrification, grids and data centres — stays firm.

Every additional tonne mined is a tonne that has to be trucked or railed across a landlocked country to a port hundreds, sometimes thousands, of kilometres away. That is where the story gets harder.

The trajectory: Zambia is targeting more than 1 million tonnes of copper in 2026 and 1.2 million tonnes by 2027, up from a record ~890,000 tonnes in 2025. (Source: EquityAxis / Capmad, 2026)

Three Routes, Each With a Catch

Westward, the Lobito Atlantic Railway returned to full international operations in June 2026 after a roughly two-month suspension caused by severe flooding — a reminder that the shortest route to the Atlantic is also young and weather-exposed. Eastward, the China-backed TAZARA revival, anchored by a deal worth around US$1.4 billion, aims to rebuild capacity to Dar es Salaam. Southward, the traditional road haul through Kasumbalesa to Durban remains workable but exposed to border congestion and route-concentration risk.

No single corridor can yet absorb the full surge on its own. The practical outcome is a multi-route copper strategy in which volume is spread across west, east and south depending on availability, cost and reliability week to week.

The Logistics Opportunity

For SADC hauliers, forwarders and corridor operators, a million-tonne Copperbelt is a demand signal. Backhaul opportunities, bonded transit handling, fuel and tyre supply, and reliable cross-border trucking all scale with the metal. The operators positioned on more than one corridor — and able to switch when one chokes — will capture the most of it.

The flip side is that mine ramp-ups are only as good as the weakest link in the chain. A flooded bridge, a stalled border or a rail outage can strand value at scale, which is exactly why diversification has moved from theory to necessity.

What This Means for SADC Logistics Operators

Copperbelt freight demand is rising — position for it. Build relationships and capacity on more than one corridor, plan for weather and border disruptions rather than treating them as exceptions, and target the supporting services (bonded handling, backhaul, fuel) that scale with copper volume.
