Trains Across the Line: Botswana Railways Trials Direct Cross-Border Freight Services from South Africa to Gaborone

Botswana Railways has begun trialling direct cross-border freight trains running from South Africa through to Gaborone, removing one of the oldest friction points in regional rail: the handover at the border. It is a small operational step with large implications for how cargo moves across the southern half of SADC.

Reported by Railways Africa in late May 2026, the trial of through-running freight trains between South Africa and Gaborone lands just as the two governments name rail and border infrastructure as shared high-impact priorities. For shippers, it points to a future where a wagon does not have to stop, swap operators and wait at the line.

What the trial changes

Historically, freight moving by rail between South Africa and Botswana has had to be handed over at the border, with locomotives and crews changing and trains effectively re-formed before continuing. Each handover adds hours or days, paperwork and a point where things can go wrong. A direct cross-border service — one train, cleared to run through to Gaborone — is designed to strip that friction out.

The trial is being run by Botswana Railways in cooperation with its South African counterpart, and sits within a wider push to make the two networks interoperable rather than merely adjacent. Proving the concept on the Gaborone route creates a template that can be extended deeper into Botswana and onward toward the copper-rich north.

Why it matters for the wider corridor

Botswana sits at the centre of the southern SADC map. It is the land bridge between South Africa's industrial heartland and the ports of Namibia to the west, and a key link on the North-South Corridor running up toward Zambia and the DRC. A railway that can move cargo across the SA-Botswana border without a costly stop makes every onward connection more competitive against road haulage.

The trial also dovetails with longer-term ambitions, including the proposed Mosetse-Kazungula-Livingstone link that would carry trains over the Kazungula Bridge into Zambia. Through-running across the SA-Botswana border is a necessary first proof that rolling stock, signalling and customs can be coordinated across national operators — the same problem every future corridor must solve.

From trial to timetable

A trial is not yet a scheduled commercial service, and the gap between the two is where most rail ambitions stall: harmonising safety rules, agreeing how revenue and access charges are split, and guaranteeing reliable paths on both networks. The encouraging signal is that this is happening against a backdrop of active rail reform in South Africa, where private train operators are now gaining access to the national network.

For shippers, the practical question is whether a reliable, schedulable cross-border rail option will exist for the kinds of volumes that currently move by truck. If the trial converts into a regular service, bulk and containerised cargo on the Gaborone route gains a genuine alternative to the road.

What This Means for SADC Logistics Operators

Watch this route closely. Direct cross-border rail to Gaborone could reshape the cost and reliability of moving bulk and containerised freight on the SA-Botswana lane, and forwarders who understand how to combine rail line-haul with road first- and last-mile will be positioned to offer cheaper, lower-emission options as the service matures.
