The DRC's state cobalt entity Entreprise Generale du Cobalt and trader Trafigura have moved the first commercial copper and cobalt cargoes to global markets over the Lobito Atlantic Railway, with the opening shipments bound for customers in the United States — a milestone that turns the long-discussed corridor into a working export route.

For two decades, Copperbelt minerals have crawled east and south to congested ports. The first commercial run to the Atlantic via Lobito proves a shorter route exists — and that proof, more than any ribbon-cutting, is what reroutes freight.
The Lobito Atlantic Railway runs roughly 1,300 kilometres from the deep-water port of Lobito on Angola's coast to the DRC border at Luau, with a further extension toward Kolwezi in the heart of the Copperbelt. It is the shortest route from the DRC's mining heartland to an African port, cutting inland transit to about seven days — a fraction of the multi-week journeys minerals have traditionally taken to reach Durban, Dar es Salaam or Walvis Bay.
The EGC–Trafigura cargoes matter because they are commercial, not ceremonial. Where earlier announcements described intent, these shipments demonstrate that the rail, the border crossing and the port can move real tonnage to a paying customer abroad — the test every corridor must pass before shippers commit volume to it.

A single shipment proves the concept; sustained capital proves the commitment. The railway has secured about US$753 million in debt financing from the US International Development Finance Corporation and the Development Bank of Southern Africa, and in April the project drew a further US$1.3 billion backing arrangement involving the Africa Finance Corporation and the African Development Bank. The total programme is valued near US$5 billion, with major groundbreaking on the greenfield extension expected around the turn of 2026–2027.
SADC has long listed the corridor as a regional priority in its Infrastructure Development Master Plan, and the three governments along the route signed a transit facilitation agreement to keep the line moving across borders. That institutional scaffolding is what separates Lobito from the many corridor concepts that never reach steady-state operation.
For the wider region, Lobito introduces a genuine westward axis to a mineral-export geography that has leaned east and south. With copper output climbing and cobalt prices elevated, the Copperbelt needs more than one reliable outlet, and a working Atlantic route eases pressure on the Trans-Kalahari, Beira and North-South corridors that currently absorb the load.
Competition between routes is good news for shippers. It disciplines tariffs, spreads congestion risk, and gives traders leverage to negotiate. The open question is ramp-up: whether Lobito can scale from first cargoes to consistent train cycles fast enough to capture a meaningful share before the next harvest of mineral volume arrives.
Mineral traders and forwarders should begin pricing Lobito as a live option alongside eastern and southern routes, while watching train frequency and border-crossing reliability before shifting committed volume. Operators on the Trans-Kalahari and North-South corridors should expect gradual competitive pressure on tariffs as the Atlantic route scales.
