Maputo Port's US$500 Million Expansion Plan: What the 9th Biennial Conference Means for SADC Shippers in 2026

Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) has used its 9th Biennial Conference in May 2026 to confirm that its US$500 million expansion programme is on track, with new container and coal terminal capacity due to come online by early 2027 and two 105-tonne ship-to-shore cranes scheduled to arrive in the third quarter of 2026.

With Durban running multi-day vessel anchorages, Cape Town battling capacity constraints, and the Cape route still absorbing Red Sea diversion volumes, Maputo's US$500 million expansion makes it the most credible second mover in South-Eastern SADC's container and bulk logistics chain.

A US$500 Million Five-Year Bet on Maputo

MPDC, the public-private concessionaire that runs the Port of Maputo, used its biennial industry conference to confirm that a US$600 million capex plan has been formally adopted for the first three years of its extended concession, with US$500 million of that already committed to expanding terminal capacity, deepening berths, and modernising cargo handling equipment.

Two new ship-to-shore container cranes, each rated at 105 tonnes and worth approximately US$13 million, are due to arrive in the third quarter of 2026. Together with quayside reinforcement and dredging works, they will allow Maputo to handle larger geared and Panamax-class container vessels currently routed through Durban and Richards Bay.

Why Maputo Is Becoming SADC's Most Watched Eastern Gateway

Maputo's geography puts it within striking distance of South Africa's industrial heartland — the port sits closer to Gauteng than Durban by road. With the N4 Maputo Corridor upgrades, the Komatipoort border streamlined, and the rail link to Pretoria now backed by €144 million in French and EU funding, the port has the makings of a credible alternative for SADC importers and exporters under pressure from Transnet's slow recovery.

The port's container business has more than doubled over the past five years, and MPDC has openly signalled that the next phase will move it from secondary feeder status to a primary container gateway for South Africa's interior, Eswatini, and southern Mozambique. The coal terminal expansion adds dry bulk leverage at a time when Richards Bay's coal export pipeline is still constrained by rail availability.

What This Says About Regional Port Competition

Maputo is not the only port investing — Walvis Bay, Beira, Nacala, and Cape Town are all running major concession programmes in parallel — but it is the only one with a fully signed, financed, and time-bound capex plan now reaching execution. ICTSI is rebuilding Durban Pier 2 under a 25-year concession, but its full-year-five capacity targets only land in 2030.

For shippers, that timing gap matters. Maputo's new cranes will be operational years before Durban's automation programme reaches its productivity peak, giving freight forwarders, importers, and BCOs a credible mid-decade hedge against single-port dependency on the South African east coast.

What This Means for SADC Logistics Operators

If your import or export programme currently routes 100% through Durban or Richards Bay, the second half of 2026 is the right moment to add Maputo into your contingency mix. Pre-qualify freight forwarders with Maputo network capability, model the road-and-rail cost differential to Gauteng, and pressure-test border clearance times at Lebombo and Komatipoort before peak season demands force the decision on you.
