Africa Air Cargo Defies the Global Slump in March 2026: Why a 7% Growth Print and Ethiopian's Pharma Renewal Are Reshaping SADC Aviation Strategy

African airlines posted a 7.0 percent year-on-year increase in air cargo demand in March 2026 — at a time when global air cargo demand fell 4.8 percent — making Africa the strongest-performing region in the world for the third consecutive month, according to IATA data published in early May 2026.

March's print is the third straight month of double-digit relative outperformance against the global average — and it lands in the same week Ethiopian Cargo renewed its IATA CEIV Pharma accreditation. For SADC freight forwarders, the message is direct: pharmaceutical and perishable lanes are the structural opportunity, not the cyclical bonus.

Five months, one direction

African airlines have now outperformed the global air cargo demand average for five consecutive months. January 2026 came in at 18.2 percent year-on-year growth, February at 21.0 percent and March at 7.0 percent — the moderation a function of base effects rather than weakening demand. The global picture in March was the opposite: cargo tonne-kilometres fell 4.8 percent as freight rates softened on Asia-Europe and Asia-Pacific lanes.

IATA, AFRAA, AFCAC and AASA reinforced the same theme at the IATA Focus Africa Conference in Addis Ababa on 29-30 April 2026: African air cargo demand is being driven by a structural mix of perishables, pharmaceuticals, e-commerce and trade-route diversion away from Suez and the Strait of Hormuz, not by a one-off surge.

Ethiopian's pharma renewal raises the bar for SADC

Ethiopian Cargo & Logistics Services renewed its IATA CEIV Pharma certification in early 2026, covering both airline operations and ground handling. The carrier now operates 70 dedicated cargo destinations across Africa and beyond, and 140 passenger destinations that double as belly-cargo capacity for the continent's freight forwarders. CEIV Pharma is the global benchmark for temperature-controlled pharmaceutical handling — and renewal signals continued investment in pharma cool-chain capability at Addis Ababa's Bole Hub and at Ethiopian's network stations.

For SADC operators, the practical implication is that Addis Ababa's pharma corridor capability is widening just as South Africa's R5.7 billion OR Tambo mid-field cargo terminal moves toward 2027 commissioning, and as Cape Town's Ethiopian freighter rotations remain at eleven flights per week. Pharma operators routing finished medicines, clinical trial samples and reagents into and across SADC have more sophisticated cold-chain options than at any point in the past decade.

What the SADC air cargo strategy should look like in mid-2026

Three trade dynamics are driving Africa's outperformance and they are unlikely to reverse before late 2026. First, AfCFTA tariff phase-down and rules-of-origin tooling are pulling intra-African finished goods volumes onto faster modes. Second, Cape route diversion has lengthened sea transit by 12-18 days, pushing time-sensitive product to belly cargo. Third, SADC perishables — citrus, blueberries, grapes, cut flowers, fresh fish — are gaining market share in Asian and Middle Eastern markets that are willing to pay air-freight premiums.

The risk SADC operators must price in is concentration. The continent's air cargo growth is anchored on Ethiopian, Qatar Airways Cargo, Turkish Cargo, Emirates SkyCargo and a small group of pan-African feeders. The current Middle East corridor disruption flagged by African airlines in April highlights how a single hub event can cascade through pharma, perishables and e-commerce schedules within hours.

What This Means for SADC Logistics Operators

If you ship pharma, perishables or high-value e-commerce out of SADC, lock in capacity earlier in the cycle than you did in 2025. Build at least one pharma-grade alternative routing — Addis Ababa, Doha, Dubai or Istanbul — and verify that your 3PL has CEIV-Pharma-certified handling at both ends. The growth is real, but the corridors are narrow.
