Cape Town's MyCiTi bus rapid transit system will take delivery of its first 12-metre Volvo BZR battery-electric bus in August 2026, the first of a phased 30-unit electric fleet rollout funded as part of a R3.3 billion 2026/27 budget allocation to the network.

The Volvo BZR programme makes Cape Town the first South African metro to commit to a structured battery-electric BRT fleet at scale. With 30 buses queued for phased deployment and R3.3 billion in the 2026/27 capital plan, MyCiTi is setting a benchmark that every SADC public transport operator looking at electrification will measure themselves against.
The City of Cape Town confirmed in April 2026 that the first MyCiTi battery-electric bus — a 12-metre Volvo BZR — would arrive in August 2026, ahead of phased deployment of 30 BZR units across the network. The decision moves Cape Town past the pilot stage that has characterised most African city electrification efforts and into structured fleet replacement, with the Volvo BZR platform selected for its proven duty cycle on dense urban routes elsewhere in Africa.
The R3.3 billion 2026/27 allocation toward MyCiTi network development is the financial backbone of the move. Capital is going into both the rolling stock and the network expansion to Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha — corridors where MyCiTi's existing diesel and CNG fleet has been carrying heavy daily passenger volumes since the service launched.

South Africa's national programme to extend BRT infrastructure into Polokwane, Ekurhuleni, eThekwini, Mbombela, Msunduzi, George and Rustenburg now has a working reference for what an electric fleet decision looks like in practice — depot layout, charging power demand, route range planning, and warranty cover on traction batteries. Operators that engage with the Cape Town rollout early will lift faster than those that wait for the second wave.
For Namibia, Botswana and Zambia — where intercity coach operators are already replacing fleets to comply with tightened emissions and safety standards — the Cape Town deployment offers a real-world dataset on cost per kilometre, depot energy costs, and Eskom/NamPower load-shedding resilience. Battery-electric buses are no longer a 2030 question in SADC; they are a 2026–2028 procurement decision.
The MyCiTi electric step is happening as Gauteng works through the Gautrain concession transition that follows the end of the original Bombela agreement on 27 March 2026. The Gauteng Provincial Government and the Gautrain Management Agency have confirmed the network will continue under a public-private partnership model, but the new operator selection will reset capital expectations across South Africa's two largest urban public transport investments at the same time.
Public transport is increasingly tied into freight logistics economics: shared road space, shared diesel cost shocks, shared corridor congestion. When a metro shifts a slice of its fleet onto electric power, depot diesel demand drops, road wear changes, and the case for hybrid or electric long-haul trucking gets stronger by another notch.
Track Cape Town's electric BRT KPIs as a public benchmark for your own fleet electrification business case. Diesel-equivalent cost per kilometre, charging downtime, and depot energy procurement are the three datapoints that will move first — and the operators who collect them now will be the ones quoted on tenders three years from now.
