South Africa’s transport and logistics sector is under increasing pressure to meet the rising demands of e-commerce and online retail. With consumer shopping behaviours permanently reshaped by the Covid-19 pandemic, customers now expect faster and more reliable deliveries, placing strain on outdated logistics systems.
According to the Zebra Technologies 2023 Warehousing Vision Study, 73% of decision-makers in the warehousing industry have already started, or plan to accelerate, modernisation projects. Nearly 70% are also adopting workflow automation technologies to meet new operational demands.
Among warehouse workers, 86% believe that technologies such as robotics and smart devices would improve productivity and employee retention, despite ongoing public concerns about job losses linked to automation.
This wave of innovation aligns with government efforts to reform South Africa’s freight logistics system. The 2023 Roadmap for the Freight Logistics System, presented by President Cyril Ramaphosa, outlines plans to modernise logistics infrastructure and enable faster, more affordable movement of goods — a shift expected to benefit both consumers and the broader economy.
The rapid growth of online shopping, driven by platforms such as Takealot, Loot, Amazon (locally warehoused), Shein, AliExpress, and Temu, has placed increasing pressure on delivery networks. Consumers now expect more from logistics providers, not only in speed, but also in accuracy, cybersecurity, and reliability.
This surge in demand presents an opportunity for structural change rather than incremental upgrades. Industry stakeholders are being encouraged to adopt new communication and delivery systems that support real-time tracking, efficient routing, and integrated inventory management.
Smart technologies are playing a central role in enabling this transformation. Solutions such as mobile computers, RFID scanners, label printers, and AI-powered software are helping logistics companies manage warehouse operations, inventory control, and last-mile delivery more effectively.
Through analytics and automation, operators can process higher order volumes with improved accuracy and reduced manual handling. Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity is also linking public infrastructure with private logistics systems, enabling more responsive and flexible transport networks.
Fatima Khota, business unit manager for the Point-of-Sale Division at Rectron South Africa, says that smart transaction systems and real-time visibility tools are critical to future-proofing the logistics industry.
Partnering with Zebra Technologies, Rectron works with local logistics providers to improve operational efficiency and asset tracking across the supply chain. “By streamlining workflows across warehouses, terminals, and fleets, we help maximise productivity and improve customer outcomes,” she says.
Enterprise asset intelligence systems, used across warehousing, yard, and fleet operations, support real-time decision-making by connecting inventory, personnel, and processes throughout the supply chain. These tools are helping logistics networks become more agile and resilient as consumer expectations continue to rise.
Rectron has also implemented these technologies internally and is investing in skills development within its workforce and distribution network to support wider adoption across the logistics sector.
