South African transport, heavy lifting and installation specialist Vanguard is rewriting the rulebook on heavy-lift logistics. In an exclusive interview, Director Laura Hodgkinson explains how the introduction of wind blade shunt trailers has solved quayside constraints, ensured zero-incident delivery through rigorous training, supported expansion into Asia, and driven investments in electric equipment.
Vanguard introduced a new wind blade shunt trailer to the South African market in March 2025 to address logistics challenges in wind blade transportation. When shipped via heavy lift vessels, wind turbine blades are typically loaded in alternating root-to-tip and tip-to-root configurations and must be offloaded in the same orientation. Conventional blade transport trailers can only receive blades in a single orientation, creating significant operational constraints.
At Richards Bay port, limited quayside space prevented trailers from being turned after loading, while reversing away from the quay was not feasible. There was also no available area to establish a turning zone suitable for 94-metre blades.
To address these challenges, Bryan Hodgkinson, Managing Director of Vanguard, developed an internal concept known as “shunt trailers.” These specialised trailers allow blades to be offloaded in either orientation, supporting both forward and backward overhang. Each trailer features two drawbar connections, enabling it to be pulled from either end.
When a blade is offloaded with a forward overhang, the loaded trailer can travel directly from the quayside to a designated recoupling area along the route. The horse is then unhooked and recoupled at the root end, allowing transport to continue in the correct orientation without additional rehandling.
Since their introduction, the trailers have been further developed to reconfigure into shorter seven-axle configurations. This allows them to transport additional components such as nacelles, reducing the need for multiple trailer types and streamlining port operations.
“The introduction of the new shunt trailers has changed the way we approach these offloading operations, reducing the pressure on large-scale mobilisations of equipment and personnel.”
— Laura Hodgkinson, Vanguard
In June 2025, Vanguard successfully managed two simultaneous wind blade offloads at the Port of Richards Bay and the Port of Coega. According to Hodgkinson, the key lesson was reinforcing the importance of deploying the right tools and personnel for each operation.
The shunt trailers reduced the need for extensive equipment mobilisation, improved efficiency on site, and enabled simultaneous operations across multiple locations while maintaining safety and project delivery standards.
Vanguard’s Hong Kong office, opened in 2024, plays a strategic role in the company’s long-term regional growth. The company has a long history of executing projects between Asia and Africa, offering turnkey services for the relocation and installation of heavy plant and machinery.
The establishment of Vanguard Pacific Trading strengthens on-the-ground support for clients, from early FEED stages through to full project execution, positioning the company to capitalise on growing opportunities in the Asian heavy-lift market.
As Vanguard celebrated its 50th anniversary in July 2024, continued reinvestment in its fleet remains central to its future strategy. Recent additions include 32 lines of Cometto Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs) and Power Pack Units (PPUs), supporting abnormal load transport in confined environments.
The wind blade shunt trailers work alongside Vanguard’s Scheuerle Rotor Blade Transportation System (RBTS) trailers, creating an integrated and highly efficient solution for blade offloading and transport across Africa.
Vanguard continues to adapt its service portfolio to meet the evolving needs of renewable energy projects. The company has invested in electric pick-and-carry cranes, electric hydraulic gantry systems, and other electric tools designed for heavy-lift operations.
These investments align with the broader industry shift toward green energy while maintaining Vanguard’s commitment to efficiency, safety, and best practice.
Handling oversized loads in constrained port environments requires strict safety protocols. Vanguard ensures zero-incident performance through competency-based training, heavy transport certifications, detailed method statements, risk assessments, and regular toolbox talks.
Route surveys, equipment inspections, and dry-run simulations are conducted where required, supported by an integrated quality management system that ensures consistency and continuous improvement across all projects.
Vanguard plans to roll out its shunt trailer solution to additional ports. Deployment decisions are based on port infrastructure, access routes, quayside conditions, and turning capabilities. Each location requires detailed planning and tailored route surveys.
While challenges such as infrastructure variation and operator training consistency remain, Vanguard’s engineering-led approach and experienced planning teams are well positioned to scale this solution globally.
