GEODIS Expands Cross-Border Trucking Network Across Southern Africa

GEODIS, a multinational transport and logistics operator, has expanded its footprint in Southern Africa with the launch of a new cross-border trucking service designed to support the freer movement of goods across the region. The service, which became operational in July 2025, positions Johannesburg, South Africa, as a central hub connecting businesses to ten neighboring countries.

The offering provides flexible transport solutions through both full truckload (FTL) and less-than-truckload (LTL) options, allowing businesses of all sizes to benefit from efficient and scalable cross-border distribution.

The new network includes direct trucking connections between South Africa and Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Key urban centers served within these markets include Luanda, Gaborone, Lubumbashi, Mbabane, Maseru, Blantyre, Lilongwe, Maputo, Windhoek, Lusaka, Ndola, Harare, and Bulawayo.

Through this network, Johannesburg serves as a strategic distribution hub for a wide range of commodities, from industrial goods to consumer products. This development represents a significant step toward enabling cross-border trade in a region where logistics have historically been constrained by infrastructure and operational challenges.

The service is built around fixed transit times and variable capacity, allowing GEODIS to adapt to the evolving needs of its customers. Tailored routing solutions enable shipments to be aligned with specific customer requirements while improving efficiency across multiple transport corridors. This approach is expected to enhance trade flows and reduce bottlenecks that have previously hindered regional commerce.

According to Cobus Fourie, Managing Director of GEODIS in South Africa, the service is designed to simplify cross-border logistics for customers.

“Logistics across borders in Africa is not always smooth. With this new offering, we can provide our customers with an uninterrupted flow of goods from start to finish, supported by our local expertise and strong infrastructure,” Fourie said.

He added that the service is specifically structured to reduce complexity by guiding customers through customs procedures, regulatory requirements, and country-specific transport conditions.

GEODIS’ expansion into Southern Africa comes at a time when intra-African trade is gaining momentum, supported by initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). By delivering reliable and efficient transport services, the company is positioning itself as a key enabler of regional economic growth.

The Johannesburg hub not only serves Southern African markets but also functions as a gateway to broader continental trade networks. GEODIS’ global presence, spanning nearly 170 countries and supported by approximately 50,000 employees worldwide, strengthens this initiative. In 2024, the company reported revenues of €11.3 billion.

This international scale enables GEODIS to apply global expertise, technology, and infrastructure while delivering region-specific logistics solutions. For businesses in Southern Africa, this means access to world-class logistics capabilities supported by local operational knowledge.

With the launch of its cross-border trucking service, GEODIS is addressing one of the region’s most critical challenges: reliable ground transport. By improving connectivity between South Africa and its neighbors, the company is supporting supply chains, encouraging investment, and driving the continued development of regional trade. As Southern Africa’s economies diversify and expand, this service is expected to play a meaningful role in the logistics landscape for years to come.
