China's new-generation CH-YH1000 unmanned transport aircraft successfully completed a full-load taxiing test at Zhanghe Airport in Jingmen, Hubei Province. This innovative cargo drone, dubbed a "pickup truck in the air," is designed to improve logistics in remote regions with limited transportation options.
The CH-YH1000 features a traditional transport aircraft design with two engines and a high wing structure. To facilitate cargo loading and unloading, it includes an upward-flipping nose door and a belly hatch for specialized tasks such as emergency airdrops, pesticide spraying, and firefighting.
Unlike manned aircraft that rely on test pilots, the CH-YH1000 operates through autonomous program control. The operator uploads instructions, and the drone interprets route and runway information to make independent decisions. This requires highly reliable control systems, which are adapted from the CH-3D armed reconnaissance drone.
Launched in March 2024, the CH-YH1000 project integrates proven technologies from China's Aerospace CH UAV Co Ltd. After a public debut at the Zhuhai Airshow in November, the drone has now completed its taxiing test, marking significant progress. The next phase includes further optimization and test flights to enhance stability and reliability.
The CH-YH1000 features multiple defense measures against cyber threats, using a dedicated radio communication network to prevent hacking. If interference disrupts communication, the drone can autonomously return to its departure point along a predefined route.
With a payload capacity of 1,000 kilograms, the CH-YH1000 aims to revolutionize air logistics by offering efficient transportation at costs only slightly higher than land transport. It is expected to improve delivery networks in remote areas such as Xizang and Xinjiang, enhance online shopping accessibility, and support emergency rescue and military supply operations.
Operating autonomously, the drone can function day and night, taking advantage of off-peak hours for high-density air transport. This breakthrough is set to drive China's unmanned transport industry and contribute to the country's low-altitude economy.
