Namport, APS agree to develop green, digital logistics corridors

The Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) and Administração dos Portos de Sines e do Algarve, SA (APS) have signed an agreement to enhance collaboration in developing sustainable, green, and digital logistics corridors.

Enhancing Trade and Investment

This partnership builds on the historic and economic ties between Namibia and Portugal, aiming to improve connectivity, trade, and investment. The agreement will remain in effect for five years and focuses on identifying synergies in port development, logistics, and trade facilitation.

Focus Areas of the Agreement

Both port authorities will explore opportunities to enhance port efficiency, digitalisation, and environmental sustainability. The collaboration aligns with the European Commission’s Global Gateway initiative, which aims to invest nearly N$6 trillion (€300 billion) in smart, clean, and secure infrastructure in energy, transport, and digital sectors.

Strategic Role of Ports

The Port of Sines is positioned as a key European logistics hub, leveraging its strategic location and natural advantages. Namibia, in turn, seeks to utilise its renewable energy resources and critical raw materials to establish itself as a leader in global green hydrogen production.

Key Namibian Ports

The ports of Walvis Bay and Lüderitz will play a crucial role in this transition by supporting the export of raw materials, synthetic fuels, and green hydrogen.

  • Port of Walvis Bay: Handles approximately 5.6 million tonnes of cargo annually, serving as a major trade gateway for southern Africa.
  • Port of Lüderitz: Specialises in zinc, lead, and fish exports, with an annual throughput of around 500,000 tonnes.

APS and Its Ports

APS manages several ports in Portugal, including:

  • Port of Sines: Portugal’s largest and busiest port, handling over 60 million tonnes of cargo annually.
  • Ports of Algarve: Smaller ports handling regional trade, tourism, and maritime activities.

Future Impact of the Partnership

The partnership is expected to foster trade growth, technological innovation, and sustainability in port operations. It highlights the importance of developing an Atlantic hub and logistics corridor to facilitate commodity movement between Namibia and Portugal, reinforcing both countries as key players in global logistics.
