Cape Town liquid bulk terminal earmarked R195m for refurbishment

FFS Tank Terminals to Refurbish Liquid Bulk Terminal at Port of Cape Town

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has appointed FFS Tank Terminals as the preferred bidder to refurbish and maintain a liquid bulk terminal at the Port of Cape Town’s liquid bulk precinct. FFS will operate the terminal under a 25-year concession agreement, which is expected to enhance overall volume throughput at the port.

FFS Tank Terminals is no stranger to the Port of Cape Town, as the company has been an existing terminal operator in the liquid bulk precinct for over 20 years. Their extensive experience and expertise in handling liquid bulk products, such as heavy fuel oil and edible oils, will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of the terminal.

Investment and Infrastructure Upgrades

The new concession agreement will result in an investment of R195-million into the facility. This investment will fund the refurbishment and upgrades of the terminal infrastructure, improving operational efficiency and increasing capacity. These improvements will help the Port of Cape Town meet growing demand and ensure continued, reliable liquid bulk operations.

Acting port manager Ophelia Shabane emphasized that the selection of FFS as the preferred bidder reinforces TNPA’s commitment to maintaining liquid bulk operations and ensuring the security of supply. She added, “This transaction will not only support economic growth and development at the Port of Cape Town but will also stimulate the local economy through commitments made by the bidder such as job preservation, employment creation, local supplier development, and skills development.”

Phased Approach for Future Terminals

TNPA is adopting a phased approach to appoint terminal operators for the Port of Cape Town’s liquid bulk precinct. While all the terminals in the precinct are currently operational, more terminals are expected to undergo the concession process in the coming year. This approach aligns with the open and transparent requirements set forth by the National Ports Act, ensuring fairness and accountability in the process.
