Namibia Blocks Ship Carrying Military Cargo for Israel

Namibia Blocks Ship Carrying Military Cargo for Israel, Citing Solidarity with PalestineIn a significant display of solidarity with Palestine, Namibia has blocked access to a vessel suspected of carrying military cargo intended for Israel amid its ongoing war on Gaza. The Portuguese-flagged cargo ship, MV Kathrin, which departed from Vietnam, was denied permission to dock at the port of Walvis Bay, Namibia, following intervention by Namibian authorities.

Namibia’s Decision to Halt the MV Kathrin

Namibia’s Justice Minister, Yvonne Dausab, confirmed the decision during an interview with the state-owned news agency New Era. She revealed that the vessel's request to dock was made last Friday, but reports suggested it was carrying weapons destined for Israel.

Minister Dausab explained that she promptly involved the Cabinet and relevant ministries to ensure compliance with international obligations under the Genocide Convention and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion.

Following a police investigation, it was confirmed that the ship carried explosive materials intended for Israel. As a result, it was prohibited from entering Namibian waters.

“Namibia complies with our obligation not to support or be complicit in Israeli war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, as well as its unlawful occupation of Palestine,” Dausab stated.

Support for Namibia’s Decision

Namibia’s bold stance has garnered praise from rights groups, including the Economic and Social Justice Trust (ESJT).

“We are pleased that our government has decided to respect international law and not be complicit in genocide,” said ESJT's Herbert Jauch.

The Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) affirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the country's territorial waters. Although Namport did not directly comment on the incident, it confirmed that the ship lacked pre-clearance documentation.

Namport has previously allowed another vessel carrying “dangerous cargo” to transit through Namibian waters without docking, reflecting the country’s strict adherence to international maritime protocols.

Namibia’s Stance on Gaza

Namibia has been outspoken in its opposition to Israel’s months-long offensive in Gaza, aligning itself with South Africa in pursuing a case at the ICJ to recognize Israel’s actions as genocide.

The Namibian presidency has drawn historical parallels to Germany’s colonial-era genocide of the Herero and Nama peoples between 1904 and 1908. Tens of thousands of Namibians perished under German rule, and Namibia has criticized Germany for supporting Israel in the ICJ case.

In February, former Namibian President Hage Geingob condemned Germany’s support for Israel, accusing it of failing to learn from its past atrocities.

"Germany cannot morally express commitment to the United Nations Convention against genocide while simultaneously supporting the equivalent of a holocaust and genocide in Gaza," the presidency asserted.

International Implications

The decision to block the MV Kathrin underscores Namibia’s commitment to international law and its solidarity with oppressed populations. By refusing to allow the vessel to dock, Namibia has taken a firm stand against perceived complicity in acts of war and genocide.

This move, coupled with its criticism of Germany’s actions, demonstrates Namibia’s resolve to uphold human rights and justice on a global scale. The situation also highlights the growing international pressure on Israel amid its military campaign in Gaza, with Namibia emerging as a key voice in the call for accountability.

Namibia’s unwavering stance sends a strong message: nations must prioritize humanity and international law over complicity in conflicts that threaten global peace.
