Labat Africa Expands Cannabis Retail Operations with New Acquisitions

Labat Africa, a prominent healthcare company in South Africa specializing in medicinal cannabis, is accelerating its retail expansion by strategically acquiring new brands and diversifying its product portfolio.

The JSE-listed investment holding company recently purchased Echo Life, a CBD lifestyle brand, and secured exclusive distribution rights for Ace & Axle, a leading American pre-rolled hemp smokable. Furthermore, Labat is preparing to launch Delta 8 in the near future.

These deals follow Labat's successful listing on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (FSE) and a substantial cash injection of R300m from GR Global Ventures, a California-based firm, in exchange for ordinary shares. The funds received will be allocated over a three-year period.

Echo Life and Ace & Axle will join Labat's retail portfolio, which already includes Cannafrica, a renowned medicinal and luxury CBD lifestyle brand with three outlets and an online store in South Africa. Additionally, three new Cannafrica stores are set to open in the coming months. Each brand, including Cannafrica, Echo Life, and Ace & Axle, has its own dedicated e-commerce platform.

Herschel Maasdorp, Labat's group executive for business development, highlights the company's expansion as an exceptional opportunity for potential investors to diversify their stock portfolios due to the robust growth prospects. Labat is at the forefront of the cannabis economy, leading the way across various segments, from farming and manufacturing to distribution and, most recently, retail.

Labat emphasizes the importance of regulatory compliance in the market, ensuring that their retail products meet the standards set by health regulators. Cannafrica's products, including medicinal drops, edibles, and supplements, align with the regulations of the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra). Echo Life adheres to the standards established by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Labat's director of retail, David Roque, emphasizes that compliance not only lends credibility to their products but also instills confidence and peace of mind in consumers.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Labat successfully ventured into retail by opening its first Cannafrica store in Cape Town in October 2020. Despite the challenging circumstances, Labat's retail business thrived, with the Willowbridge Cape Town store evolving into South Africa's first cannabis experience store. The company also opened additional outlets in Johannesburg, Hartbeespoort, and an online store.

Labat attributes Cannafrica's increased sales activities during and after the lockdown to consumers' heightened focus on wellness and self-care. The recognized anti-viral, anti-anxiety, and anti-inflammatory properties of CBD made it particularly appealing amid a global pandemic. However, Labat remains cautious, acknowledging that ongoing education and research are necessary to fully understand the product's benefits and potential. Transparency and ethical accountability are paramount for Labat Healthcare, ensuring the company's integrity and contributing to the overall industry.

Labat Healthcare's goal is to elevate cannabis from an underground commodity to a sophisticated legal product. Stanton van Rooyen, the company's CEO, highlights the transition from the informal sector to the formal economy, which strengthens Labat's retail business and creates opportunities to enter the European and US markets through the FSE listing and partnerships with American-based products.

With the United States currently holding the world's largest and most advanced cannabis market valued at $61 billion, and Germany predicted to dominate the European cannabis market with a worth of €7.7 billion by 2028, Labat aims to leverage its global footprint by expanding its retail portfolio. By partnering with international brands and acquiring new retail assets, Labat seeks to reach consumers worldwide while also introducing high-quality international products to the South African market.
