Namibia Emerges as a Leading Global Hub for Green Hydrogen and Logistics

Namibia is rapidly positioning itself as a significant global player in the production and export of green hydrogen. With ambitious plans to generate and ship 3 million tons of green hydrogen annually, the country is bolstering its efforts through strategic investments in two of Africa's top-performing seaports.

The Namibian government's support for the industry, abundant wind and solar resources, expansive coastal land, and its proximity to Europe, Asia, and the Americas make Namibia an ideal location for green hydrogen production and export. This article explores Namibia's journey towards becoming a major hub for green hydrogen and logistics and highlights the pivotal role of its seaports, Walvis Bay and Lüderitz, in facilitating the country's hydrogen ambitions.

Expanding Green Hydrogen Production:

Namibia made significant strides in 2021 with the awarding of a tender for its first large-scale hydrogen project to Hyphen Hydrogen Energy. This joint venture between investment company Nicholas Holdings and German renewables developer Enertrag is set to kickstart the country's green hydrogen revolution. The initial phase of this monumental $9.4-billion development is expected to be operational by 2026, producing 300,000 tons of hydrogen annually by 2030. Encouraged by the success of this project, Namibia anticipates the emergence of numerous similar ventures, leveraging its abundant renewable energy resources, government support, and vast coastal areas.

Strategic Seaport Infrastructure:

Recognizing the importance of efficient export capabilities for hydrogen, the Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) is actively investing in the necessary infrastructure to ensure seamless exportation when Namibia is ready. Namport's CEO, Andrew Kanime, asserts that Namibia ranks among the top three countries globally for hydrogen projects. The Ports of Walvis Bay and Lüderitz, known for their exceptional performance, will serve as the main exit points for hydrogen shipments, benefiting from their strategic geographic location.

Collaborative International Efforts:

Namport is fostering collaborations with prominent international port authorities to streamline the flow of Namibian hydrogen into Europe's energy systems. Notably, partnerships with the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands and the Port of Antwerp Bruges in Belgium aim to expedite the integration of Namibia's green hydrogen into Europe's energy infrastructure. Furthermore, Namport has allocated 350 hectares of land at Walvis Bay, its larger port, specifically for hydrogen-related industries, reflecting its commitment to supporting the growth of the green hydrogen sector.

Crucial Role in Regional Trade:

Beyond its contributions to Namibia's economy, both Walvis Bay and Lüderitz ports serve as vital channels for import and export within the wider Southern African Development Community (SADC). Cross-border trade constitutes 24% of the goods passing through these ports, effectively connecting landlocked SADC countries with international markets. Namport's investments in state-of-the-art infrastructure and cargo-handling equipment demonstrate its commitment to supporting regional economic integration and positioning Namibia as the logistics hub for Southern Africa.

Continued Infrastructure Development:

Namport's dedication to enhancing its capabilities aligns with Namibia's economic transformation objectives. A feasibility study has been conducted for a new deep-water port in Lüderitz Bay, adjacent to the current port, with the aim of serving the oil and gas industry. Additionally, Namport seeks to augment bulk-cargo capacities at both Walvis Bay and Lüderitz ports to meet the increasing demand for the region's minerals. The establishment of a logistics and distribution center at Walvis Bay is another key goal, providing an efficient and secure gateway into southern Africa for investors seeking optimal trade routes.
