Namibian Ports Authority Sets New Record for Cargo Volume Handled, Driven by Exports
The Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) has recently announced a groundbreaking achievement, setting a new record for the volume of cargo handled through its ports during the financial year that concluded on March 31, 2023.
This significant milestone showcases Namport's pivotal role in facilitating trade and underlines its commitment to becoming a leading seaport operator in Africa. The remarkable growth in cargo volume, driven primarily by exports, demonstrates the increasing importance of Namport's ports in the region's maritime industry.
Impressive Increase in Cargo Volume:
Namport Experiences a Phenomenal 17% Surge in Cargo Volume
Namport's latest report reveals a remarkable increase in cargo volume, with the total reaching nearly 7.7 million tonnes. This figure represents an extraordinary 17% surge compared to the previous financial year, during which 6.5 million tonnes were recorded. The significant growth underscores the efficiency and effectiveness of Namport's operations, as well as the increasing demand for its services.
Exports Propel Volume Growth:
Exports Emerge as the Primary Driver of Namport's Cargo Volume Increase
What makes this achievement particularly noteworthy is that exports played a pivotal role in driving the growth of Namport's cargo volume. Despite Namibia not being a major producer of many items listed in the Namport export manifest, the exportation of goods experienced an astonishing 44% surge. This surge outpaced the growth in importation volumes, which recorded a more modest increase of 9%. The robust performance of exports demonstrates the effectiveness of Namport's strategic initiatives in facilitating and promoting trade opportunities for Namibian businesses.
Vessel Traffic and Gross Tonnage:
Number of Vessels Calling at Namibian Ports Increases, Boosting Gross Tonnage
In addition to the notable cargo volume growth, Namport also witnessed a positive trend in vessel traffic. The number of vessels calling at Namibian ports increased by 3% during the financial year, with a total of 44 calls recorded. This growth can be attributed to various factors, including increased calls by dry bulk, petroleum, passenger, reefer, patrol, and research vessels. As a result, the gross tonnages of these vessels experienced a substantial increase of 2.9 million tonnes or 14.9% compared to the previous financial year. This significant rise in vessel traffic and gross tonnage further solidifies Namport's position as a key player in the maritime industry.
Occupancy Rate Improvement:
Syncrolift Facilities Witness Enhanced Occupancy Rates for Repair Services
Namport's financial year under review showcased notable improvements in the occupancy rates of its Syncrolift facilities. The repair jetties' occupancy rose from 54% to 64%, while the repair bays' occupancy increased from 47% to 52%. These improvements reflect the growing demand for repair and maintenance services at Namport, as well as the authority's continuous efforts to enhance the efficiency and capacity of its facilities.
Commitment to Excellence:
Namport's Vision to Become Africa's Best-Performing Seaports Remains Unwavering
Namport remains resolute in its pursuit of excellence, firmly aiming to become the best-performing seaport operator in Africa. The authority's remarkable achievements in cargo volume growth, vessel traffic, and occupancy rates highlight its commitment to facilitating seamless trade and positioning Namibia's ports as preferred gateways for regional and international commerce. Namport's vision embodies its determination to provide exceptional services and contribute to the economic development of Namibia and the wider African continent.
