Konecranes has launched a range of container handling machines that are battery-driven: a battery rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) crane, a battery straddle carrier and an all-electric mobile harbour crane (MHC).
Citing its effort to increase sustainability and reduce CO2 emissions, the manufacturer launched the products at TOC Europe.
The Konecranes Battery RTG comes in addition to existing cable reel and busbar electric power options.
According to the company, it can be thought as “part of a system” when operated with a charging system.
This is always the case when the unit is automated while it can also be operated manually, with plug-in for charging, making it an easy-entry solution for intermodal terminals.
In a statement, the manufacturer noted: “This brings new flexibility and “no strings” electric operation to RTG-based container yards of all ages and configurations, as well as zero local CO2 emissions and virtually zero local noise emissions.”
The Finnish company also now offers the Battery Konecranes Noell straddle carrier as a system, complete with charging station.
It believes that there is no performance compromise as the battery straddle carrier can be built into customers’ work cycles and operating structure in a variety of ways.
Similar Li-ion battery technology is used as in Konecranes Gottwald AGVs, from which a large body of field experience has been drawn in terms of 24/7 operation and battery lifetime.
In June 2021, the company introduced Konecranes Gottwald Generation 6 MHCs to the market, featuring a modular drive system.
This includes the all-electric drive, combining an external power supply with a battery drive.
The first unit with battery drive is in use at the Port of Skellefteå in Sweden, while two all-electric Konecranes Gottwald ESP.9 MHCs, each with 200 tonne maximum lifting capacity, will enter operation at the Port of San Diego in spring 2023.
