Namport disputes low global ranking of Port of Walvis Bay

The Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) has expressed dissatisfaction with a recent global report that ranks the Port of Walvis Bay near the bottom of international container port performance tables.

The 2024 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), released by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, ranks Walvis Bay 376th out of 405 ports worldwide. This is a notable decline from its 293rd position in 2022, followed by a further drop to 382nd in 2023.

Namport said the ranking does not accurately reflect the operational work, improvements and investments made at the port in recent years. The Authority believes the report does not fully account for local challenges and progress.

The Port of Walvis Bay is Namibia’s main port and plays an important role in the country’s economy. It handles essential imports such as food, fuel and construction materials. The port also serves as a regional gateway, connecting Namibia to other Southern African countries including Botswana, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Namport said conditions during the reporting period affected port operations. The Authority cited the Red Sea crisis and broader geopolitical instability, which caused shipping lines to reroute vessels around the Cape of Good Hope. This led to increased vessel calls at Walvis Bay, including large container and cargo vessels that do not typically operate along the Atlantic coast of Africa.

According to Namport, this influx placed additional pressure on available marine resources, especially tug and pilotage services. Larger vessels also required extended manoeuvring time within the port basin, as Namport prioritised safe and efficient handling of all vessels within port limits.

Namport added that many ports in Southern Africa experienced similar challenges and recorded lower performance rankings in the 2024 CPPI. In comparison, Namport said Namibia’s ports showed relative improvement over previous years, reflecting steady progress in operational capability and service delivery despite global headwinds.

Namport remains confident that ongoing investments in port infrastructure, equipment, technology and operational efficiency will improve the Port of Walvis Bay’s competitiveness over time.

The Authority said it is compiling a comprehensive internal report to analyse the 2024 CPPI findings in detail and identify specific operational areas for further improvement.

Namport reaffirmed its commitment to continuous improvement, service excellence and positioning Namibia as a logistics hub for Southern Africa. It said the CPPI is a useful benchmarking tool and expects future results to better reflect the outcomes of its ongoing transformation efforts.
